Status of the Coronavirus and its Reach

Worldwide, more than 70,000 cases of the new coronavirus have been reported and more than 1,700 people — the vast majority of them in mainland China — have died of COVID-19.

The Diamond Princess Cruise Ship has been under Japan-ordered quarantine since Feb. 5, after a passenger who had disembarked earlier tested positive for the virus in Hong Kong. Fourteen U.S. passengers were evacuated from the cruise ship in Japan and flown to military bases in California and Texas have tested positive for the new coronavirus, U.S. officials confirm. An additional 44 Americans from the Diamond Princess ship who tested positive for coronavirus will stay in Japan while they recover. Some have been hospitalized, but not all who are infected are sick.

Doctors in five U.S. cities will begin testing patients with flu-like symptoms for the new coronavirus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday.

The coronavirus test will only be given to patients who test negative for the flu. So far, the testing protocol will be implemented in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Seattle, though more cities will be added. Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases said the increased testing is part of an effort to determine whether the virus is spreading in communities across the U.S. “The results would be an early warning signal to trigger a change in our response strategy,” she said.

We have experienced an enormous increase in demand for masks, disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizer, gowns and many other infection control products as health facilities and laboratories attempt to prepare for further impact of this virus. Currently, masks are the primary product impacted. We are not taking orders for masks unless product is readily available. Your orders remain non-cancellable and non-returnable for all impacted product categories. We are working with our manufacturing partners to secure product for you.

Product categories include: N95 masks, regular earloop masks, disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizer, thermometers, isolation gowns, gloves and other infection control categories.

We will keep you posted on changes in product availability.

Using CPP to Simultaneously Clean Pesticide and PCB Extracts

Using CPP to Simultaneously Clean Pesticide and PCB Extracts

CarboPrep Plus (CPP) may be used to clean EPA 8082 extracts for Aroclor quantitation, provided caution is exercised in choosing the quant peaks, setting up the possibility of processing a combined pesticide/PCB extract without the sulfuric acid clean up step.

Why clean the PCBs extracts at all?  If pesticide extracts are run on the same instrument regular maintenance would be required to meet the stringent inlet inertness requirements for endrin and DDT.  PCB methods typically do not have the same stringent requirements, however samples typically have high concentrations of non-volatile matrix compounds that build up in the inlet effecting chromatography, which effects quantitation.

An effective cleanup is also important since chromatographic interferences make it difficult to perform Aroclor pattern identifications.  Other challenges include weathering which can significantly change the Aroclor pattern combined with different Aroclor mixtures.

• Maximum Contaminant Removal

• Less Instrument Downtime

• Higher Sample Throughput

Keep your organochlorine pesticide GCs up and running by protecting them against matrix components with superior sample cleanup. Resprep CarboPrep Plus SPE cartridges surpass traditional Florisil products in cleanup power for sample matrix compounds that cause active sites in GC inlets and columns, degrading pesticides and interrupting work due to failed calibration checks. For CarboPrep Plus cartridges, Restek uses a proprietary treatment to create an exceptionally clean carbon that exhibits consistent selectivity. The end result is a reliable sample preparation product that does not contribute interfering background signal and does not need to be evaluated lot to lot to see if elution volumes need to be adjusted. In addition, CarboPrep Plus cartridges are designed to use the same equipment, solvents, and solvent volumes as a traditional Florisil cleanup procedure, minimizing the impact of switching on sample prep labs while maximizing the performance benefit to analytical labs.

Introducing Atomic Panda

Introducing Atomic Panda

Introduced early in 2019, Atomic Panda is Mercedes Scientific’s (MSI) newest mascot, joining the ranks of Henry the Histo-Potamus, and his wife Hazel. Atomic Panda (and his lesser know secret identity, the mild mannered lab tech Andy Pandy) have hosted MSI’s ongoing monthly Supply List Raffle, along with other promotions throughout the year. While Henry tends to speak to the Histology audience for the most part, Atomic Panda has more of a medical and wider laboratory focus. In 2020, Atomic Panda co-hosts with Henry in the 2020 Breakthrough Technologies Calendar – which is free with orders upon request, and offers monthly giveaways with prize questions. When his plush toy was shown off at the 2019 NSH trade show in New Orleans, LA, attendees loved the panda with the red shirt and red glasses – and they didn’t seem to know about him after months of exposure. The panda plush toy inventory was fully depleted by the end of the trade show.

Mercedes Scientific will continue to make customers aware of Atomic Panda, and the SAVINGS he fights to bring. Request your Atomic Panda and/or Andy Pandy when you order online, or with Customer Service or a Sales Rep!

Mohs Training at Mercedes Scientific

Mohs Training at Mercedes Scientific

In partnership with Beck Consulting & Associates, Inc., Mercedes Scientific (MSI) is once again hosting the Mohs Training Workshop. This is the fourth workshop to be held at MSI’s facility, and should prove to be just as successful as the previous ones. Lodging, food and drinks are provided. The two-day training is a Hands-On Sectioning and Staining Course, which has been approved for accreditation through the National Society for Histotechnology.

The two-day training will take place on February 27-28, 2020.

At this training workshop, the tech will learn:

  • Cell structure and tumor identification
  • Techniques for correcting stain irregularities for frozen sections
  • Advanced equipment and microscope maintenance
  • Embedding techniques for all sections; frozen section biopsies, excisions and full section for Mohs
  • Hands-on cutting workshop for trouble shooting on cryostat
  • Hands on special staining – Mart 1
  • Steps for “faster turn-a-round time”
  • We also provide lectures on helpful tips for trouble-shooting and review your procedure manual for CLIA compliance.

This training workshop requires advanced registration, and on a first come-first serve basis. Seating is limited.

Beck Consulting and Associates provides THE ONLY  ACCREDITED PROGRAM for technical training and consulting for Mohs and  Histology laboratories for over fifteen years!
